Public education must stink these days...
May. 12th, 2011 07:23 pmSo the other day at work, I am reading my nook in the breakroom whilst eating my lunch. Two college-aged work study girls come in to nuke their lunch.
"Oh, sorry, didn't mean to interrupt your reading," says one.
"Must be good," says the other.
"No worries," say I, "it's omething I have read before & will probably read again."
Girls - "what book?"
Me - "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
Girls - "what's it about"
Me - *blink* **stare** Silence... "Er, it's by Jules Verne."
Girls - *blank stares* "who?"
Me - "Early science fiction..."
Girls - "Like from the '50s or something?"
Me - "No, more like the '70s; the 1870s"
Girls - "Woah."
But wait, there's more
Then yesterday, a potenial small business client came in to speak with my boss. My boss was out of the office, so I chatted with the gal for a few & took a message.
Me - You're name?
She - Hospitality W------
Me - What an interesting first name. The Puritans used to name their children like that,
She - Who? The water company?
Me - Um, no. a religious sect. They left England in the 1600s & formed the Plimouth Colony.
She - Wow, I never knew that. I'll have to google that. How do you spell Puritan?
The conversation went down-hill from there. This young woman is enrolled in college. Basic American history - jeez!
